I remember seeing him in the upstairs function room of a pub in Sutton Coldfield, when he was refused entry to the room because even the comedy organisers didn't recognise him! Personally I feel you can't beat the intimate surroundings of a small club for stand-up. While an arena is good for music acts (where you can use lighting, screens and pyrotechnics to good effect), stand-up can be about a look or mannerism to make a gag work, which is lost if you are 100ft or more away from the stage.Purple Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15278483760533467660noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951859514699520415.post-14992718007819371772011-02-19T18:10:41.277+00:002011-02-19T18:10:41.277+00:00I feel Leicester is not a city people will travel ...I feel Leicester is not a city people will travel to for comedy (except for a select few like me).

What wouldn't have helped yesterday is the fact Leicester City FC were playing at home and the Comedy Festival had so many shows clashing at the same time. Joe Lycett & Andrew Ryan, Josh Widdicombe, Greg Davies & Friends, Chris McCausland, Liam Mullone, Matt Rudge, Terry Alderton and Tim Key were all on at the same time as you. Therefore a very saturated time slot for a limited available audience. We've always been part of small audiences over the past six Leicester Comedy Festivals and it is now something we are prepared for when we travel from Birmingham each year.

It's such a crying shame because the programme has so many great performers all of whom deserve to be seen.Purple Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15278483760533467660noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951859514699520415.post-14457934749243434592011-02-09T11:51:54.435+00:002011-02-09T11:51:54.435+00:00Hahaha, my favourite of your blogs for a while. Anyway, we'll be paying off that education for the next 25 years. It's impossible to get a decent job WITHOUT a university education. Jobs that at one time only need secondary education now require college diplomas or university degrees. There are so many people looking for jobs, the competition is high, and without a good education, chances are pretty bleak. In addition, traditional jobs in manufacturing were shipped to countries where workers are paid far less means that there aren't jobs out there for those without an education, unless it is in the service industry. And what kind of future is that? Then, add on to that, less and less companies are actually hiring people fulltime. They are preferring to go with contracts. Oh man, this rant is getting long. It is amazing in the whole back to front genre, as I think it was all shot in one take, and the whole backwards thing is so cool - so it goes forwards, rather than back. I dunno, you have to watch it to see what I mean. So yeah, then I started looking up other backwards (in the best sense of the word)music videos, and found Drop. If I had gone, though, there would've been at least one person in the audience who is very much like your description of your political self.

I also can relate to the whole thing of just wanting to shout about things - though, not being a comedian means I have more leeway with that sort of thing. That said, it doesn't exactly make me popular with colleagues when, sat at lunch, one says they're flying to spain FOR THE WEEKEND (I can't even think about that without wanting to shout) because well, it's so cheap and easy, so why not, I respond 'well, punching a baby would be cheap and easy, but that doesn't really justify doing it does it?!'. Queue uneasy silence, mutterings of 'what the hell's punching a baby got to do with it' and everyone moving away and never speaking to me again. It's very difficult, but I think that history does repeat, and that if you keep on writing topical jokes then eventually you will be able to re-use them, or at least re-use the punchline, with a big of jiggery-pokery. But the ability to admit that a joke has passed its shelf-life puts us above those comics who will come on stage in February and ask people if they had a fun new years party.

Having said that, I am positive that Cat In The Bin Lady will be timeless. Even in the year 2050, we'll be able to ask who remembers her.

-- Chris Coltrane (I tried posting under my LiveJournal ID, but it says "Your OpenID credentials could not be verified".
